The Accomplishments of Kirameki 2025 and the Resolutions of 2026 for Rural Revitalization in Japan

Updated: Mar 24

Hello, everyone! It is the one-year anniversary of Kirameki!

We have grown so much from the start, and we are just getting started!

With Kirameki continuing to grow, we are starting Blogs - detailed stories of what has been happening on the ground in Kita-Hiroshima for you all to experience and stay in the know of our story.

For our first blog, I, Kira, want to give you all a glimpse of what we have done for the first year of Kirameki, what we have accomplished, and what our goals are for 2026 and beyond!

歩み

The goal was to create a model of how to contribute to Japan, live in the countryside, preserve traditions, and build a lifestyle that is rooted in peace, joy, and cultural appreciation. I wanted to create the origin/base of something that can be experienced and even replicated by anyone.

Our Core Pillars: Community, Culture, Nature, and Culinary

Focusing on these key pillars, I developed an ecosystem of dozens of local artisans, senseis, accommodations, and rural experiences that encapsulate the core of what makes Japan so special.

2025 by the Numbers:

We led over 150 guests to the Kirameki, and reached over 130,000 people across platforms, have been featured in dozens of news segments, articles, podcasts, and travel agencies/magazines. We also poured in 100% of our GoFundMe donations into the Kirameki Center headquarters in our first year, continuing revitalization, welcoming interns, volunteers, and employees, and we have been able to contribute more than ever imagined possible through being on the ground, supporting every aspect like social media, carpentry, agriculture, and temple restoration projects.

We transitioned from a sole proprietorship into an official corporation, and all the goals of the first year (initially 1 program per month) were blown out of the water as we ran back-to-back programs each and every month!

Truly, Kita-Hiroshima is now on the map.

The Heart of the Mission: Relationships

There are a million and one things I could rave about for the first year of Kirameki, but the greatest highlight of all has to be all the collaborative relationships we have solidified, and all the happiness we brought to this town.

Whether we were making soba, exploring incredible mythological sites together, partaking in UNESCO world heritage events, biking through the rice fields, living as though it was the Showa-era, experiencing martial arts, art residencies, or simply enjoying the atmosphere of yet another revitalized building that has become our favorite teahouse—becoming a major actor and figure in this town, Hiroshima, and Japan, has been the greatest milestone of all.

“This is so much more than just a holiday. This is a healing experience that will completely change your perspective on life. ..We met so many beautiful people in such a short amount of time, it made us want to drop everything back home and buy a house in Kitahiroshima.” - Trent Sierra
“My favorite part about my whole time at Kirameki was the people that I met throughout my couple days in the Japanese countryside. As someone who has 3 years of Japanese under their belt it was so nice for me to chat about different topics in regard to culture, music, and history with the locals. Every single person in Kitahiroshima had a smile on their face and curiosity to talk to me and learn more about myself. It truly brings peace and happiness to look back at my conversations with the people and their passion for promoting the history and culture of the Japanese countryside.” - David Perez
“From indigo dyeing and tea ceremonies to archery and traditional performances, every activity felt meaningful and thoughtfully chosen! Nothing about it felt touristy - just authentic experiences and kind, open-minded people. It was amazing to meet so many locals and see a side of Japan that most travelers never get to experience.” - Julian Boes
“If you're looking for authenticity, if you're looking to shape how you view things, if you're looking for a life-changing experience focused on people and their passions, or if you're simply looking for a nice vacation in the countryside of Japan to reconnect with nature, Kirameki offers all this and more.” - Alaa Karanouh

A Global Connection

I vividly remember being on a brightly lit escalator at Omotesando in Tokyo, when a young woman tapped my shoulder and asked, “Are you.. Kira..meki?”. At that moment, I was speechless. Stunned to be recognized in Tokyo of all places. She commended me for living out in the countryside, truly immersed in community, and making a difference.

It has been surreal hearing all the stories and wonderful testimonies I've heard from people all over the world about how Kirameki not only got them excited and hopeful about something good happening in the world, but the mission and its creation inspired them to also pursue their dreams in their lives.

I am trying to show that amidst a world of chaos and struggle, beautiful things not only exist, but we can create them too.

Bridging the World with the Countryside

I believed when I first visited Japan and moved to the countryside, that if every person in the world could visit this place and meet the people i know, the world would become a better and happier place … and I still stand by that; so far I have been right!

Not only do the people who have visited felt like adopted family, true friends, and return visitors, the community members involved with each and every stay have been stunned by the true passion for culture, joy to experience, and eagerness to learn about Japan and the country's rural culture.

At Kirameki, we are bridging the world with the countryside, and everyone is experiencing something special through each and every program. It was a lucky and earnest decision naming the business Kirameki; A place people go to shine, and the community shines too.

Hiroshima itself is the second largest prefecture with a declining population—marked by the horrors of the Atomic Bomb, as well as the beauty and charm of Itsukushima (Miyajima island). Most travelers will spend a half day, 1, or 2 days in Hiroshima, and you get a sense of how incredible it is that from ashes, an entire city can rise and represent peace and revitalization in a way like no other.

There is a sense that the history is not old here, but I wanted to change that. Barely an hour north, Kitahiroshima is the portal to the Chugoku Mountain Region, a mythological belt that is most known for ancient Shinto customs and historic samurai warrior and lord enclaves. In 2025 I strived to open up a new and additional way to experience Hiroshima, and something truly positive, ancient, and beautiful that is rare not only in Japan, but in the world. There is so much rich history here and stories that have never been heard outside of the region, and the ability and access to it has been unlocked through Kirameki, the first English and Japanese speaking rural revitalization and tourism initiative in this region.

For all kinds of budgets, durations, goals, and seasons, Kirameki ensures that your itinerary will be deeply woven with locals, special region-specific activities, and a true immersion into the mythic of Japan.

So you may be wondering, what’s next?

Starting March 2026 onwards, Kirameki Programs are officially in full swing. Typically coordinated a month in advance, our programs are suited to families, couples, friends, honeymooners, retreats, filmmakers, artists, entrepreneurs, and anyone eager to unlock a part of the world few have seen.

In the mountains of the countryside of Japan, you will discover the bliss of life here, and experience what a genuinely happy, hardworking, collectivist minded, safe, and serene community is like. Kirameki opens the door to the region to make things as easy as possible for visitors, since many local businesses and artisans can only be coordinated through personal local connections!

And to make things even easier, starting in April 2026, we are launching....

Kirameki Campers! The first English/foreign-friendly campervan experience in this region!

The region of Northern Hiroshima, Shimane, Tottori, and Yamaguchi, is vastly underexplored, and to be able to facilitate the first English/foreigner friendly campervan experience in this region will allow for travelers to truly embrace this special region. Shrines and temples rooted in the stories of the birth of Japan, sand dune adventures, and special culinary experiences are all dotted across the region, and will be shared with all Kirameki Campers as a thorough regional directory!

These regions have spent years working on tourism initiatives, and many have failed, and at Kirameki we know the most crucial way to promote places is through accessibility and coordinated logistics. We are excited to unlock a new way to experience the countryside of Japan, as well as continue fostering the incredible relationships within Kitahiroshima Town and beyond.

Whether it's stays, adventure tours, luxury retreats, campervan roadtrips, and more, Kirameki has become much more than a business, but rather a concept.

A concept that at the intersection of culture and community, there is true joy and meaning in life.

None of this would have been possible without the trust of the Kitahiroshima community, our dedicated team, and every single one of you who followed our journey from a vast dream to an actual business. To our donors, our guests, and our local collaborators: thank you for believing in the Kirameki vision.

This first year has been a whirlwind of growth, and we are humbled by the support we have received both here in the mountains and from new friends across the globe. We cannot wait to welcome you to the countryside in 2026.

Let's continue to shine, together. ✨💛

<3 nice work. Whenever I read your blog or IG it reminds me so much of the teachings and philosophy of Wendell Berry. The importance of neighborliness and love and affection; not just for each other but for the land and nature and animals. The importance of local connections and creating a regional history and culture and unity :)

I wish you could partner with their foundation because what they try to do in Kentucky I believe is the same thing you are striving for in rural Japan/Hiroshima. Keep up the good work and fight my friend! xoxo
