ABOUT ME

Kira Bella – Founder & CEO of Kirameki

I was born in Tanzania, raised in Australia, and at 15, moved to the United States, a journey that seemed to have no clear destination. But, through all my travels and experiences, I’ve come to understand that life isn’t about knowing exactly where you’re going, but embracing the journey itself. Before the age of 24, I had traveled to over 40 countries, each one shaping me and igniting a deeper passion for cultural exchange, connection, and the stories that unite us all.

Today, I find myself in Japan, in a quiet, rural corner of Hiroshima Prefecture, a place I never imagined would become home, yet one that’s taught me the deepest lessons about life, peace, and the beauty of rootedness. It’s here that I’ve learned to appreciate the simple joys of community, tranquility, and a life lived with intention. It’s here that I’ve been inspired to create Kirameki—a space that reflects all I’ve learned and everything I now hold dear.

I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon and am currently pursuing a Master’s in Sustainable Energy at Johns Hopkins University. My studies and my travels have deepened my commitment to environmental sustainability, but it’s the connections I’ve made with people that have truly shaped my vision. I believe that to care for our planet, we must first care for each other, our relationships, our communities, and the stories that bind us.

Through sharing my journey on social media, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with over 40,000 people from all over the world. Each interaction has reinforced my belief that we are all interconnected and that, together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future.

I’ve come to realize that Japan is facing challenges that require innovative solutions, especially in rural areas. Depopulation, overwhelming tourism in certain regions, and a rapidly changing society present opportunities to rethink the future. I believe that through community-centered initiatives, sustainable practices, and a deep appreciation for history and culture, we can find solutions that respect the land, the people, and the future.

Hiroshima, in particular, has always fascinated me. Often overshadowed by its tragic past with the atomic bomb, it’s a prefecture that has been overlooked for far too long. But in my eyes, it’s time to reclaim the beauty, the wonder, and the rich history that exists here. Hiroshima represents resilience, renewal, and peace, and I believe it can be a model for rural revitalization, showing how communities can rebuild, rejuvenate, and thrive.

When I arrived here, the history and culture of this area captivated me. Surrounded by ancient Shinto customs, 3,500-year-old Kagura dance performances, and breathtaking landscapes that change with the seasons, I have found a deep connection to a culture that feels timeless. But what makes this place even more extraordinary is its people. The community here feels like family. It’s a place where younger generations are choosing to trade their busy lives in the city to live authentically in the countryside, finding their ikigai, their true purpose, by embracing the rhythms of rural life. One of the most inspiring examples is a young woman down the road, who with her friends, created a beautiful horse-riding business and café, combining her love for animals and nature with the serene pace of country living. Watching her and so many others live out their dreams has reminded me that the pursuit of joy, purpose, and authenticity is always possible, no matter where you are.

This is why Kirameki was born, a space where I can share everything that has inspired me, everything I’ve learned, and everything I now hold dear. Kirameki is the culmination of my life’s journey, a journey that has taken me across continents, immersed me in vibrant cultures, and taught me that true fulfillment lies not in what we have, but in how deeply we connect with the world around us.

Through Kirameki, I want to offer you the chance to experience the joy of this place, to embrace the magic of cultural exchange, and to join a community that celebrates life’s beautiful moments. Kirameki is a living, breathing reflection of my journey and my passion for authentic connections, community, and joy. It’s my way of offering the world a chance to experience what I’ve found here in this magical corner of Japan. A place where life moves at its own pace, and every day is a new opportunity to discover, connect, and grow.

Thank you for being here, for sharing this journey with me. I’m so excited to welcome you to Kirameki, where we can all enjoy something truly extraordinary together.
